Former Southampton star flees Israel due to attack

Former Saints midfielder Rory Delap has departed Israel following the Hamas attack over the weekend.

Delap was a Southampton Football Club player from 2001 to 2006.

According to reports, Delap sheltered in a panic room with former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane before fleeing to Greece from Israel when Hamas launched rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Delap had been serving as an assistant manager for Maccabi Tel Aviv under Keane since June.

Long throw specialist made 152 appearances for Saints, helping the side reach the 2003 FA Cup final, which they lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

 

When then-manager Stuart Gray bought the Republic of Ireland international for £4 million, he set a record that remained for over a decade until Jay Rodriguez signed for the club from Burnley for £7 million in 2012.
