For Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the offseason offers a chance to rest and retool.
This year, he’s taking a more technological approach.
Allen told reporters this week that he has been focusing on improving the mechanics of his throwing motion following an early injury in 2023 that required him to adapt. After throwing a career-high 18 interceptions, the Bills quarterback admitted he wanted to improve his motion efficiency and partnered with a sports science company to do it.
Josh Allen Leans on Technology to Fix Throws
Allen stated that he examined his game film extensively this summer and discovered numerous flaws in the way he altered his throwing motion following an early season shoulder injury. According to Sal Maiorana of the Democrat and Chronicle, the Bills quarterback used cutting-edge technology to solve the problem.
Allen employed digital mapping technology to break down his throws and increase efficiency, according to Maiorana. Allen worked with Biometrek, a California-based sports science company, to have his throwing action caught by high-speed cameras, giving him a complete perspective of his delivery.
While there was no dramatic change, Allen believes the modifications will help him increase his accuracy and efficiency next season.
“I wouldn’t call it a complete overhaul of my throwing motion, but definitely some things to work on and clean up,” Allen stated. “Anytime you go through something like that, it will feel fantastic at times and bad at others. It’s like improving your golf swing; as long as you trust it and keep working on it, you’ll see results every day.”
Allen maintained a balanced perspective, recognizing that every quarterback might benefit from some offseason practice to increase their throwing efficiency.
“I think that there’s inefficiencies that every quarterback can find,” Allen stated. “You show me the perfect throw, I’ll tell you something wrong with it probably.”

Allen had an up-and-down season in 2023, tossing the most interceptions in his six-year career while leading the league with 44 total touchdowns. He helped to right the ship after early-season problems, leading the Bills to five consecutive victories to finish the season and win the division in the championship game.
The Bills will approach 2024 with a new offensive look after losing both of their top receivers, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. The squad signed a number of new veterans, including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Curtis Samuel, and Chase Claypool, and used their first-round pick on youngster Keon Coleman.
Josh Allen’s Changing Game
Allen has spent the last two offseasons healing from persistent injuries while simultaneously working to improve his game. Following the 2022 season, head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane encouraged that Allen reduce the number of unnecessary hits he took on the field.
Allen made some progress in that area, reducing his quantity of rushing attempts, but the club continued to rely on Allen’s running in short-yardage situations. He finished the season with 15 rushing touchdowns, tied for the most among quarterbacks.
