The Pittsburgh Steelers secured an 18-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, but the game came with a significant setback. Punter Cam Johnston, who had signed a three-year, $9 million deal this offseason, sustained a knee injury when a defender collided with his leg, causing his knee to nearly bend backward. Johnston was visibly in pain and had to be assisted off the field by trainers, struggling to put weight on his leg.
After the game, coach Mike Tomlin provided an update on Johnston’s condition, noting, “From a health standpoint, it appears Cam Johnston has a serious injury. I’ll have more information when we next convene. It’s unfortunate for him.
He’s been outstanding in his role—both in terms of talent and his professional approach. My heart goes out to him.” Johnston, now in his seventh NFL season, previously played three years with the Philadelphia Eagles and the last three with the Houston Texans.
In his first game with the Steelers, Johnston had just two punts but averaged 51.5 net yards, with a long of 58 yards and one punt inside the 20-yard line. Following the injury, Steelers general manager Omar Khan will likely begin searching for a new punter. The Steelers will be on the road again next Sunday, facing the Dolphins in Denver at 4:25 p.m. ET.
