The Detroit Tigers are locked in a tough ALDS showdown with the Seattle Mariners, but regardless of how the series ends, one issue stands out — they need a true closer to finish games.
According to FanSided’s Mark Powell, the answer could come from San Diego. He believes the Tigers should target Padres reliever, who is expected to opt out of his contract this offseason.
“As for possible suitors, one team remaining in the postseason, the Detroit Tigers jump to mind. Detroit used a closer-by-committee approach this season, and given Scott Harris’ decision not to add a top-tier reliever at the deadline, why not pursue one in free agency? Suarez would be a tremendous fit,” Powell wrote.

Suarez certainly made his case in 2024, posting a 2.97 ERA, 75 strikeouts, a 0.904 WHIP, and 40 saves in 70 appearances — elite numbers for any bullpen arm.
Detroit has relied on a rotating group of relievers to close games this season, but as shown in their recent loss, the strategy hasn’t provided consistency. Signing Suarez would give the Tigers the dependable finisher they’ve been missing.

Picture this: Tarik Skubal going deep into a game, handing the ball to Suarez for the ninth. That one-two punch could make wins almost automatic — as long as the offense does its part.
If Suarez does opt out, Detroit should absolutely pick up the phone this offseason and make a serious push to finally secure a proven closer.
