Last summer, the New York Mets made the blockbuster deal of the year, signing Juan Soto to a $765 million contract. However, they completely failed to upgrade their pitching, which contributed to their failure this season.

They need to make another splash this offseason, but instead of hitting, they should focus on pitching. Fansided’s Zachary Rotman feels they have a chance to make the winter’s biggest deal by acquiring Detroit Tigers Cy Young ace Tarik Skubal.
The New York Mets have been linked to Skubal more than any other club, and it’s easy to understand why. They really need an ace. David Stearns is staunchly opposed to paying for frontline starters, but he was involved in the Crochet negotiations last summer, and there’s no reason to expect he won’t be interested in obtaining Skubal. The expiring deal is a little bothersome, but it also means the Mets can probably avoid include Nolan McLean in any trades,” Rotman said.

Rotman went on to say that the Mets have numerous MLB-ready pitchers and young MLB players with high promise to deal, so they have plenty of resources to give up.
“Even without McLean, the Mets have enticing prospects in Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat, Carson Benge, and Jett Williams, all of whom are or are nearing MLB readiness. The Mets have young MLB players like Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Ronny Mauricio to dangle. To close a trade, at least two of those top prospects and a few more components would be required, according to Rotman.

With the possibility of back-to-back Cy Young awards, Skubal would be worth every piece lost in a deal. Hopefully, the Mets will make an offer soon, as they will not be the only team competing for Skubal.
