SAD NEWS: Cardinals Outfielder To Start 2026 Season On Injured List After Major Setback

St. Louis’ key outfielders recently underwent surgery earlier this month to shave down Haglund’s deformities on both heels, a procedure that took place on October 7. At the time, his recovery timeline remained uncertain. However, team president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom shared in a radio interview with Matt Pauley of KMOX Sports that Opening Day remains a possibility—though not a certainty—for the player’s return. Bloom emphasized that the organization won’t rush the rehab process just to have him ready by the start of the season, but added that any potential absence would likely be brief.

In terms of offseason surgery timelines, this particular case isn’t viewed as overly concerning. Missing a few early games in 2026 wouldn’t be ideal, but considering the Cardinals are entering what appears to be a rebuilding phase, those missed contests likely won’t have a major impact on their postseason hopes. Lars Nootbaar, is coming off a difficult year where he hit just .234/.325/.361 (96 wRC+) after previously posting three straight seasons with a wRC+ of 114 or better. For St. Louis, allowing him extra recovery time could pay off if it helps him return to his more productive offensive form.

The 28-year-old remains under team control for two more seasons before reaching free agency in the 2027-28 offseason. With the Cardinals possibly still retooling by then, Nootbaar represents a realistic trade option. While his uncertain Opening Day status might slightly cool trade discussions, it’s unlikely to have a significant effect on his overall market value.

Teams were already aware that Lars Nootbaar would be rehabbing this winter, and his recent struggles may prompt the Cardinals to hold off on trading him until he can rebuild his stock. St. Louis has little reason to sell low now, especially with the chance to move him at the 2026 trade deadline—when he could still contribute to two playoff runs and remain eligible for a future Qualifying Offer if it still exists after the next CBA negotiations.

Even if Nootbaar does miss some early time, the Cardinals’ depth provides coverage. Jordan Walker, Victor Scott II, Alec Burleson, and Brendan Donovan can all handle outfield duties, with Nathan Church and Michael Siani available as backup options. Donovan may see more time on the infield if the team trades Nolan Arenado this offseason, but players like Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese can step in when Donovan shifts to the outfield.
