After learning that a defenseman is considered day-to-day with an injury, the New York Rangers have recalled a blueliner from their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The move doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The call-up is expected to serve as the Rangers’ seventh defenseman, providing valuable depth on the blue line while another young player steps into the vacant lineup spot. So far this season, the newcomer has appeared in nine games for Hartford, collecting two assists and offering a steady, physical presence that’s been a key part of the Wolf Pack’s defensive group.

This recall gives Mackey another opportunity to make an impression at the NHL level. A former Calgary Flames defenseman, he’s known for his mobility, shot-blocking, and willingness to play a hard-nosed style — traits that align well with the Rangers’ defensive identity under head coach Peter Laviolette.
Meanwhile, the team is also dealing with another lineup change up front. The Rangers have placed Matt Rempe on injured reserve following the injury he suffered during his highly publicized fight with Ryan Reaves last week. While the team hasn’t disclosed the exact nature of Rempe’s injury, reports suggest it could be a broken thumb, potentially sidelining the young forward longer than initially expected.
Rempe’s absence removes some grit and energy from the Rangers’ fourth line — two qualities that have defined his brief but entertaining time in New York’s lineup. His fearless approach and willingness to drop the gloves have quickly made him a fan favorite, and his return will be eagerly awaited.
Looking ahead, the Rangers are set to return to home ice tomorrow night for a marquee matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. It will mark the first meeting of the season between the two Eastern Conference contenders — a test of depth and resilience for a Rangers squad looking to stay near the top of the standings despite recent injuries.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden.
