Paul Finebaum is gearing up for a hectic few months as the SEC’s coaching carousel starts spinning. Programs like Arkansas, Florida, LSU, and Auburn are all expected to make new hires this offseason.
Among them, Auburn could be the first to fill its vacancy, with Tulane’s Jon Sumrall emerging as the betting favorite for the job. Finebaum shared his thoughts on the possibility during The Matt Barrie Show, suggesting Auburn fans would be more than happy with that move.
“The betting favorite at Auburn is Jon Sumrall,” Finebaum said. “It might not be the kind of hire that makes national headlines, but if that’s how it plays out—and we’re just speculating here—I think nearly every Auburn fan I’ve spoken to would be thrilled. That job is much better than people are giving it credit for.”

Jon Sumrall has emerged as the frontrunner to become Auburn’s next head coach, according to the latest odds from Kalshi.
While speculation swirls about his future, Sumrall remains focused on leading Tulane to a potential College Football Playoff appearance. The Green Wave’s hopes took a big step forward after a stunning upset win over Memphis.

Auburn, meanwhile, is navigating a period of transition after parting ways with Hugh Freeze following the loss to Kentucky. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has stepped in as the interim head coach, but the Tigers suffered another setback on Saturday, falling to Vanderbilt 45-38 in overtime.
