MLB Latest: Phillies unlikely to retain All-star as trade destination confirmed

Major League Baseball’s offseason has arrived, and the rumor mill is running hot. Here’s a streamlined look at Saturday’s biggest updates.

The Phillies aren’t projected to bring back free-agent lefty Ranger Suárez, and with Zack Wheeler set to miss the start of next season as he recovers from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, it might seem like they’d be searching for another starter. However, that may not be the case.

Dave Dombrowski told The Athletic, “I can’t say we wouldn’t. But, again, it’s not our highest priority… You always need to look for starting pitching depth… that doesn’t necessarily mean top of the market.” He also noted the organization doesn’t have much pitching depth beyond its top options.

Right now, the Phillies appear set to roll with Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, and prospect Andrew Painter in their rotation.

The Athletic also reports that Philadelphia remains intent on keeping Kyle Schwarber, having recently met with his agency during the GM meetings.

Astros interested in Cardinals’ Donovan
Cardinals super-utility player Brendan Donovan is shaping up to be a hot trade target this winter thanks to his strong production, defensive flexibility, and years of team control. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, the Astros are among the teams showing interest.

Houston is intent on boosting its offense after ranking 21st in runs scored last season. General manager Dana Brown said, “When we score four or more runs, the team is really good. We want to put some more runs on the board.”

Mariners want to retain own free agents
After falling short in the ALCS, Seattle’s priority is keeping key members of last year’s roster. GM Justin Hollander told the Seattle Times, “Our offseason is largely going to start with the guys who were on the team last year and try to bring as many back as possible.”

The Mariners are aiming to re-sign Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suárez, and Jorge Polanco. Earlier reports indicated Naylor was at the top of their list, but it’s unclear if talks have progressed.

Angels seeking bats
The Angels finished last season near the bottom in scoring and adjusted offensive output, so finding meaningful lineup upgrades is high on their agenda.

GM Perry Minasian told the Orange County Register, “We want to be a more balanced offense… So does it have to be left-handed? No. Apples to apples? Of course, you choose left hand over right-handed.”

CBS Sports previously identified the Angels as potential matches for affordable options like Jorge Polanco and Harrison Bader, though it’s unknown whether the club plans to pursue either. They’re also expected to target pitching help, including multiple starters.
