The Philadelphia Phillies are entering a crucial offseason, with major decisions looming on the futures of Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto — choices that will heavily shape Dave Dombrowski’s plans.
Losing Schwarber’s power bat would be a significant setback, but the team may already have a potential replacement lined up if he departs in free agency.

Japanese star slugger has emerged as a serious option, and according to a new report from nikkansports.com, the Phillies are showing strong interest in him.
Nikkan Sports reports that “star hitter, who officially requested posting on the 8th, has already drawn attention from several clubs,” adding that the Phillies are “particularly aggressive” in their pursuit.
Philadelphia’s interest isn’t shocking, but being singled out as a leading suitor makes this storyline one to watch closely. Murakami, posted on November 8, has 45 days to negotiate with MLB teams. The Phillies view him as a potential fallback if Schwarber leaves.
If Schwarber makes his decision before Murakami’s window closes, Philadelphia would have a clear replacement plan. But if Schwarber delays until after Murakami’s deadline, the team could be left scrambling.
The 25-year-old Murakami is one of this offseason’s most debated free agents. His raw power is undeniable — with home run totals of 56 (2022), 31 (2023), 33 (2024), and 24 (2025) — but his high strikeout numbers raise questions.
Schwarber, however, has the same strikeout tendencies. He fanned 197 times this season, matching his total from 2023, and led MLB in strikeouts in both 2022 and 2023 with 200+ each year.
Given the similarities, it’s no surprise the Phillies are seriously evaluating Murakami.
A final decision must be made by December 20, when Murakami’s posting window ends — forcing Philadelphia to choose between signing him or waiting on Schwarber.
If Schwarber returns, Murakami may be off the table. But the Phillies’ strong interest, driven by Dombrowski, is real and could shape their offseason plans.
