Breaking: Done deal!! Cardinal’s Pitcher Officially Joins Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox, like most clubs, are aiming to strengthen organizational depth as they work through their free agency plans.  They have added 25-year-old pitcher according to his transaction log.

Although he is not the marquee signing fans might be hoping for this offseason, he still represents a potentially useful piece. He spent last year splitting time between the St. Louis Cardinals’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates.

He originally joined the Athletics in 2017 before signing with the Cardinals in 2024. His overall season numbers were uneven, but he did manage to put together a respectable stretch at the Double-A level. Across 28 appearances there, he posted a 3.74 ERA and struck out 48 batters. He made four starts in Double-A, though the Cardinals used him exclusively out of the bullpen once he reached Triple-A. The move up proved challenging, as he recorded a 9.20 ERA in 12 Triple-A outings. Over his minor league career, he holds a 5.44 ERA.

Given his track record, Osvaldo Berrios is expected to open the year in the minors. Even so, he has already pitched at Triple-A, and with that experience, he could be an option for Boston if depth issues arise. After signing him, the Red Sox assigned him to Triple-A Worcester.

While the organization has stated it wants to acquire a frontline starter, bolstering pitching depth remains essential. Injuries are inevitable over a long season, and teams consistently depend on arms from the minor leagues to help absorb innings.

Berrios represents a minimal-risk move for Boston. As the piece notes, “If he shines during spring training or during the minor league season, the Red Sox could consider calling him up for his debut.” If he doesn’t break through, the cost of a minor league deal is negligible, making the signing a practical depth play.
