Breaking: Done deal!! Padres officially sign top experienced infielder to free agent contract

The San Diego Padres have brought in additional flexible infield depth for their system.

The infielder is the latest player to join the Padres, and his name may ring a bell since he previously signed with both the Yankees and the Mets within the past year.

He agreed to a contract with San Diego, a deal that is expected to come with an invitation to major league spring training, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.

Now thirty two, Pablo Reyes has appeared in portions of seven MLB seasons. Over his career, he carries a .245 batting average across 259 games and has produced a .272 mark against left handed pitchers.

Defensively, Reyes has shown remarkable versatility at the MLB level. He has appeared at first base, second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field, right field, and even logged five innings as a pitcher.

Reyes earned a spot on the Yankees’ 2025 Opening Day roster, although he finished his stint with New York hitting .194.

The Yankees designated him for assignment in June, which led to him signing a minor league contract with the Mets.

Mets sign recently DFA'd Yankees utilityman

New York never promoted him to the major league roster, but he excelled at Triple A Syracuse, where he posted a .289 batting average and a .484 slugging percentage.

For the Padres, adding Reyes helps address a clear need. While their starting position players are strong, their bench options do not feature many true plug and play depth pieces with broad defensive flexibility. Reyes fits that profile, giving San Diego a player capable of filling multiple roles in the infield and outfield.

Because he handles left handed pitching well and can move around the diamond with ease, Reyes should enter spring training with a realistic opportunity to compete for a roster spot. His recent success at Triple A, combined with his extensive MLB experience at numerous positions, strengthens his case to become a useful depth option for a Padres team looking to fortify its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
