Breaking News: Phillies Officially Sign World Series Champion Pitcher

The Philadelphia Phillies offered a glimpse into how the remainder of their offseason could unfold after finalizing a $10 million deal with a two-time All-Star.

While formally introducing newly signed outfielder, who agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski suggested the club views its outfield as largely complete heading into next season.

“We’re basically pretty well set out there,” Dombrowski said, via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “We feel very good.”

Along with Adolis García’s arrival, the Phillies are planning to elevate top prospect Justin Crawford into a major league outfield role, while Brandon Marsh is expected to share the remaining spot with a platoon partner. With those pieces in place, Philadelphia can now turn its attention toward discussions about bringing back catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Phillies Bring in ‘Fiery Competitor’ With Championship Pedigree

Any additional roster tweaks appear likely to be on the margins. That approach was reflected in another recent move, as the Phillies added veteran right-hander Jonathan Hernández on a minor league deal.

“RHP Jonathan Hernandez has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies for the 2026 season,” Phillies analyst Steve Potter reported. “His arsenal includes a lively sinking fastball (sits 93–97 mph — has reached 99–100 mph) with a hard slider and changeup. He’s known as a fiery competitor.”

The signing was also confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, by Phillies Tailgate.

Hernández was part of the Texas Rangers’ World Series championship team in 2023, though he recorded a 5.40 ERA over 43⅓ innings that season. In 2024, he posted a 5.05 ERA across 41 innings before being designated for assignment. He was later claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners, where he made just three appearances before finishing the year at Triple-A.

Phillies’ Newest Pitcher Recovering From Shoulder Injury

This past season, Hernández signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays and delivered a strong 2.25 ERA in 12 Triple-A innings. However, shoulder issues kept him on the injured list for much of the year.

After several seasons of big-league opportunities, it was a setback year for the veteran right-hander. Now in the Phillies’ organization, Hernández will look to work his way back to the majors, though he is expected to open the season in the minors and would need to show he has rediscovered peak form to earn a promotion.
