GREENVILLE, N.C. — The East Carolina Pirates football program added a major boost to their 2026 roster this weekend by securing a top running back commitment. The move highlights ECU’s continued focus on building a dynamic, playmaking offense capable of competing at the top of the AAC.

The Pirates have been active in strengthening their backfield, targeting both high school prospects and transfer portal additions to create depth and versatility. Coaches noted that finding a player who could contribute immediately while also offering long-term potential was a priority for the program.

Coming off a remarkable senior season, the new addition impressed scouts and coaches alike with his combination of speed, vision, and versatility in both the rushing and passing game. He played a critical role in leading his high school team deep into the state playoffs, showing consistent production against top-tier competition.

Meliq McGowan, a 6-foot, 190-pound prospect from Stratford High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina, made his commitment official via social media on Saturday, January 10, 2026. McGowan rushed for 1,896 yards and 23 touchdowns on 200 carries, while also adding nearly 200 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, finishing the year with 2,324 total yards. His talent and proven production made him one of the most sought-after backs in the region.

McGowan joins a backfield that also includes transfer additions Ashton Gray (North Texas) and Michael Allen (Marshall), giving the Pirates a mix of immediate contributors and high-upside talent for the future. The coaching staff emphasized that McGowan’s skill set complements the existing roster and provides additional explosive options in the running game.
With McGowan officially in the fold, East Carolina enters the 2026 season with a strengthened backfield and renewed optimism for its offensive attack. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how this key addition impacts ECU’s performance, both in the short term and as a foundational piece for the program’s future success.
