BREAKING: New York Rangers GM Chris Drury Confirm Major “Retool” With an Intriguing Deal For a Highly-Rated Young Center

It’s no secret that the New York Rangers are likely to move some key players before the trade deadline. GM Chris Drury recently confirmed the team is entering a “retool” phase due to ongoing struggles. Top stars Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck are the most notable names rumored to be on the move.

Another player who could be on the trading block is Alexis Lafreniere. The former top prospect has faced challenges since signing his seven-year, $52.1 million ($7.4 million AAV) contract extension. Head coach Mike Sullivan even recently demoted and publicly criticized Lafreniere for his lackluster performance.

The only way Alexis Lafreniere stays in Rangers' top six long-term

Following those remarks, The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano suggested that a trade could benefit both sides: Lafreniere might thrive in a fresh environment, and the Rangers could move on from the difficult situation. Mercogliano also noted that New York would likely seek a young, NHL-ready player in return.

One potential option is Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright. NHL insider David Pagnotta recently reported that Seattle is open to trading the highly touted center for a top-six forward. Like Lafreniere, Wright was a top-five draft pick with high expectations but has struggled in 2025-26 despite previous solid seasons.

Shane Wright Could Address a Positional Need While Saving the Rangers Money

Despite a disappointing year, Wright could be an appealing target for New York. The 22-year-old center posted 44 points in 79 games during his rookie season, and his current struggles could be chalked up to a sophomore slump—a pattern seen with other top prospects like Carolina’s Seth Jarvis, who is now nearly a point-per-game player.

A key factor in a potential Wright-Lafreniere swap is Wright’s position. Quality young centers are hard to come by, and acquiring him could help the Rangers fill a crucial need, potentially even serving as a long-term replacement for Trocheck.

Financially, the deal would also be favorable. Wright makes under $1 million annually and isn’t a restricted free agent until 2028, while Lafreniere carries a $7.4 million AAV. Even if New York covers some of Lafreniere’s salary, the team would still free up significant cap space—especially if Panarin and Trocheck are also traded.

Lafreniere’s Future Remains Uncertain

Lafreniere’s status with the Rangers is still unclear. When asked by The Athletic’s Peter Baugh if he’s willing to stay with the team during its retool, Lafreniere replied, “Of course.” However, he also revealed that Drury hasn’t spoken directly to him since the retool announcement—a conversation the GM has had with other key players.

While trading Lafreniere carries some risk, a swap involving Shane Wright could provide benefits for both sides: the Rangers fill a key need, Wright gets a fresh opportunity, and Lafreniere gets a chance to reset elsewhere.
