Early Season Disaster? Rangers Lose Key Piece in Sudden Injury Twist

The Texas Rangers are dealing with an early wave of adversity as they prepare for the upcoming season, with injuries already beginning to reshape the roster picture. Spring is typically a time for competition, optimism, and hard-earned roster battles, but for Texas, it has also become a period of recalibration. Two players who were looking to carve out meaningful roles in 2026 are now facing setbacks that could alter both their timelines and the club’s depth chart.

Infielder Cody Freeman has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back, the organization confirmed. The injury is expected to sideline him for approximately four to six weeks. Freeman, who reporters noted brought a noticeable spark to the clubhouse and lineup after his call-up last August, had positioned himself as a legitimate contender for a bench role entering the season. His energy and versatility made him an intriguing option for a roster spot, but this setback likely removes him from immediate consideration.

With Freeman expected to miss significant time, Ezequiel Duran now appears firmly in place as the primary backup infielder, assuming no further injuries complicate matters. Meanwhile, Sam Haggerty is widely viewed as a near lock to secure a position player role. That leaves just one remaining spot among the position players still up for grabs as camp competitions continue.

The Rangers also shared an update on pitching prospect Winston Santos, who sustained a fracture in his non-throwing hand after being struck by a comebacker while throwing batting practice. Santos will not face live hitters for roughly four weeks, though he is able to continue throwing during his recovery. Once his left hand heals, he is expected to resume full activity quickly.

Winston Santos has strong Spring Breakout start for Rangers

Santos’ injury comes after a challenging 2025 campaign in which he made only six starts — five with Double-A Frisco and one with Triple-A Round Rock — before logging 18 innings in the Arizona Fall League. The likely plan is for him to open the season in Round Rock, though a return to Frisco remains a possibility as he works his way back into rhythm.
