Breaking: Mets Receive Major Injury Update On Francisco Lindor As He Sends 6-word Message to Fans

As March begins, Francisco Lindor remains focused on being ready for Opening Day with the New York Mets.

In an exclusive conversation with Dan Martin of the New York Post, Lindor continued to voice confidence that he can be prepared for the start of the season, even though he has yet to participate in any spring training drills or live game action.

At the start of camp, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns announced that Lindor would need surgery to repair a fractured right hamate bone, sidelining him from baseball activities for an estimated six to eight weeks.

Manager Carlos Mendoza also shared an update prior to Sunday’s exhibition matchup against the Houston Astros. Mendoza explained that the club’s standout shortstop has been taking one-handed swings and is hopeful that, if his injured hand gains strength in the coming days, he can begin progressing in both batting and defensive work.

Although Lindor did not provide a specific rehab timeline, the 31-year-old told Martin he believes he is in a good place physically and is concentrating on building strength every day. While Opening Day remains his goal, Lindor admitted it is still too soon to know with certainty whether he will be available.

Since arriving in Flushing in January 2021, Lindor has been remarkably durable, missing just 52 games over five seasons, including only two contests last year. The All-Star shortstop is coming off an impressive 2025 campaign, posting a .267/.346/.466 slash line with 31 home runs, 86 RBIs, an .812 OPS, and 31 stolen bases.

If Lindor is unable to suit up for Opening Day, one potential depth option is no longer available. Infielder Grae Kessinger is projected to miss eight to 12 weeks after suffering a serious left knee injury, with surgery “on the table,” according to Mendoza.

Francisco Lindor 'still optimistic' about his Mets Opening Day status

Even so, Mendoza expressed confidence in the club’s remaining infield depth should Lindor not be ready. Vidal Bruján and Ronny Mauricio are among the players competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

As for concerns about a possible gap at shortstop, Lindor made his stance clear, telling Martin, “We are going to be fine.”
