JUST IN: ESPN drops major update regarding Auburn football head coach Alex Golesh

The Auburn Tigers football faithful have been desperate for a turnaround, and for good reason. The program has not resembled its traditional standard in several years. After uneven stretches under Bryan Harsin and Hugh Freeze, the word “change” in East Central Alabama now translates directly to one thing: winning.

There is, however, growing belief that athletic director John Cohen and the administration may have identified the right solution.

According to ESPN’s Harry Lyles Jr., new head coach Alex Golesh could be exactly what Auburn needs. Lyles points to Golesh’s impressive January transfer portal class, ranked No. 11 nationally, along with his track record of transforming culture during his two seasons leading the South Florida Bulls football in Tampa.

“Auburn hasn’t looked like itself this decade: How fast can Alex Golesh fix that? The newfound hope and expectations for a turnaround are going to be present with any new head coach. But Golesh took South Florida from 1-11 to 7-6 in his first season as head coach (2023) and left the gig as one of the best coaches in the Group of 6. This program needs stability as much as anything, and Golesh seems more than capable of bringing it. Having the 11th-best portal class is a good start,” Lyles wrote.

Byrum Brown can be what Auburn fans have been missing for years

Much of that optimism centers on former USF quarterback Byrum Brown. No position impacts a team’s trajectory more than quarterback, and Brown’s arrival gives Auburn legitimate hope of reclaiming relevance.

Brown represents the caliber of signal-caller the Tigers have lacked since Bo Nix, who was recruited by Gus Malzahn. Following Nix’s departure, the quarterback room struggled to find consistency. Harsin even saw Nix transfer before blossoming into a Heisman contender with the Oregon Ducks football and eventually developing into an NFL standout with the Denver Broncos.

Repeated misses at the sport’s most important position have been difficult to comprehend, especially when paired with five consecutive losing seasons despite significant financial investments in the program, particularly during Freeze’s tenure.

Golesh appears to have landed a difference-maker in Brown. Now, it simply has to translate onto the field, health permitting.

If it does, Auburn’s long-standing craving for a return to prominence may finally be fulfilled — the kind of satisfaction that feels instant and undeniable.
