JUST IN: Cubs Star Ian Happ Announces Major Decision as His Free Agency Nears

Chicago Cubs left fielder Ian Happ is entering his tenth season with the team, and it could very well be his last at Wrigley Field.

That hasn’t stopped him from making the most of his time in the Windy City. The 2025 season marked Happ’s first postseason win with the Cubs since his rookie year in 2017, and he’s eager for more moments like that.

What is Happ’s focus?
The answer is straightforward: winning.

After experiencing a taste of playoff magic last year, Happ wants to chase more of those moments in 2026. As he heads toward free agency after this season, that could be a storyline—but he isn’t letting it become a distraction.

“The focus is just so much on this group. Both enjoying it and playing really good baseball together. It makes it a lot easier when you’re on a good team that’s going to compete that that can be the main focus.” – Happ to Sharma

Happ and many experts have high expectations for this Cubs team. Chicago has a real shot at winning the NL Central and potentially making a championship run. Facing the Los Angeles Dodgers will be tough, but the Cubs believe they can rise to the challenge.

Looking back, Happ’s last “walk year” three seasons ago was a different experience. His defense needed work, and strikeouts were a concern. Since then, he has earned four consecutive Gold Glove awards, while also improving offensively. Happ sees a clear contrast between that season and now.

“It’s way different. Where you’re at in your career, having had some consistency, having already been paid (essentially) as a free agent is much more comforting. You’re at a different point of your career and life, so it’s a much different experience.” – Ian Happ

Even if 2026 turns out to be his final season in Chicago, Happ plans to stay fully engaged.

“I will be back in Chicago. No matter where I am next season, I will be back in Chicago. But enjoying it now in this moment is important to me. Having it happen with guys you love and want to compete with makes it a lot easier.” – Ian Happ

Should this be Happ’s last year with the Cubs, he’ll carry the memories of his Chicago tenure with him for a lifetime.
