BREAKING: UNC great John Henson said the quiet part out loud about Caleb Wilson’s injury

Former John Henson understands what this stage of the season represents for North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball. While the program enters every year aiming to contend for a national championship, achieving that goal often requires several things to go perfectly.

One major factor is avoiding injuries, something UNC unfortunately struggled with throughout this season.

Henson offers a former player’s viewpoint

Speaking on the The Field of 68, Henson was asked about Caleb Wilson being ruled out for the rest of the 2025–2026 campaign. He shared an interesting observation about late-season practices, especially considering Wilson suffered his most recent injury while rehabbing from a previous one.

3 ACC tournament injuries robbing fans of joy including Caleb Wilson for UNC

“I can’t remember a time where we really practiced at this point of the season. It was called Run and Shoot. You get in the gym, you run through the plays, you run your sets and you put your shots up and you get outta there, specifically for things like this that could happen. Like, literally, Coach Williams, worst-case scenario, best player gets hurt.

And now all this money now and all this sweat equity you have in the season is up in the air because I don’t know what they were doing when they were practicing. But I was making a joke earlier — I don’t remember dunking after March, except in the Elite Eight when you go to the big arena and you dunk for the fans and they yell and scream.”

UNC Basketball: Three questions for Tar Heels in ACC play

“A generational player you rarely see at your school”

Henson recognizes just how significant Wilson’s absence is, emphasizing that players of his caliber rarely come through a program.

Making the case for Caleb Wilson to stun everyone and return to UNC next season

Injuries like Wilson’s are difficult for everyone involved:

“It’s unfortunate. For Carolina, it’s unfortunate for the fans. This is a generational player you just don’t see at your school a lot. He’s gonna be a top-five pick. Obviously their ceiling drops dramatically from a championship-type level to — I think they can still make a run — but when you look at the Duke game, which essentially is the best team in the country and one of the highest-rated teams ever, he was the reason in the first half that they even were in it. He was hitting tough shots after tough shots. He was the guy who kept them afloat.

UNC Basketball: Top performers in non-conference play

For them to lose a guy like that going into Cameron? It is devastating, and it’s just unfortunate for the program. They’ll be fine without him. I was listening to some of the stuff — their defense has actually been better, but that’s probably because the margin for error is smaller and they had to tighten things up on that end knowing they don’t have the luxury of a Wilson down there.

You just feel for the fan base and the school, but it is what it is. That’s college basketball. We got to see a good run from him. And it’s on to the next level, man. He’ll be a top-five guy. I think he’ll be really good in the league.”

While the situation has been difficult for both Wilson and the Tar Heels, Henson acknowledged that the team must keep moving forward. UNC now shifts its focus to the players available for the postseason, while Wilson likely turns his attention toward preparing for the upcoming NBA Draft.
