SAD NEWS: ACC in Total Meltdown After Brutal Carter Welling Injury Update

The high point of Clemson’s 71–62 second-round win over Wake Forest was followed by a sobering moment in the locker room late Wednesday night. The Tigers secured a spot in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, but the victory came at a significant cost.

Sophomore forward Carter Welling, who went down in the first half with a right knee injury, was later seen in the tunnel at the Spectrum Center wearing a large knee brace and using crutches. Head coach Brad Brownell, usually measured in his comments, was direct when asked whether his 6-foot-11 interior presence might be available for Thursday night’s matchup with North Carolina.

With the team still awaiting official medical imaging, Brownell admitted his initial outlook was far from optimistic.

“Yeah, I don’t have obviously, they’re going to do MRIs and all those things,” Brownell told reporters. “I mean, I find it unlikely that he would play tomorrow. I haven’t been told anything definitive.”

Welling’s emotional departure in the first half — after posting five points and four rebounds in just 10 minutes — left a noticeable void in Clemson’s rotation. The Tigers had been playing some of their most cohesive basketball of the month before the injury, something that clearly frustrated their head coach.

“It’s obviously disappointing, because I just thought we were really doing well tonight and would love to be at full strength,” Brownell said. “But I mean that’s part of it, so we’ll figure out a way to do that.”

Welling’s absence doesn’t just remove a starter; it forces Brownell to rethink how he manages his bench. Clemson has relied on a “platoon system” to keep its big men fresh and aggressive, a strategy that becomes much tougher without its full rotation — especially against a well-rested North Carolina team. Brownell even tried to lighten the mood with a wry comment about the situation while noting how thin the Tigers’ rotation has become.

“Obviously it’s a little harder to do the platoon system. We only have nine—so play North Carolina, five on four.”

If Welling is unable to play, more responsibility will fall on RJ Godfrey — who finished with 11 points and six rebounds against Wake Forest — along with Nick Davidson, both of whom may be asked to handle extended minutes in a high-pressure game. Clemson will face a North Carolina squad also dealing with a major absence in star Caleb Wilson, though the Tar Heels will benefit from “fresh legs” after earning a double-bye.

Clemson proved Wednesday it could maintain control without Welling, but taking on the fourth-seeded Tar Heels with a trip to the semifinals on the line presents a far bigger challenge.
