From the moment Caleb Wilson stepped onto the court in Chapel Hill, there was a sense that something special was unfolding. The expectations that come with wearing the Carolina blue are immense, especially at a program as historic as North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball, where legends are not just remembered—they’re immortalized. For Wilson, this wasn’t just about putting together a strong freshman campaign; it was about etching his name into the fabric of a program that has defined greatness in college basketball for decades.
When he first arrived, Wilson made his intentions crystal clear: he wanted to leave Dean Smith Center with his jersey hanging in the rafters. That’s a goal reserved for the elite of the elite, requiring not just talent, but a season—or career—that demands recognition on a national scale. By the end of his freshman year, what once sounded like an ambitious dream had become an undeniable reality.
Caleb Wilson earns a historic accolade

One of the requirements for a player to have their jersey honored at North Carolina is earning First- or Second-Team All-American recognition from the Associated Press.
On Tuesday, the 2025–2026 All-American selections were officially announced—and Wilson checked that box, earning Second-Team All-American honors.
An incredible freshman season
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Wilson quickly established himself as one of the most dominant freshmen in recent memory. He became the 54th Tar Heel to earn First-Team All-ACC honors, and notably, the first freshman to do so since Tyler Hansbrough achieved the feat back in 2006. He now stands alongside Hansbrough and Antawn Jamison (1996) as the only freshmen in program history to reach that level.
Pretty elite company right there!
Wilson is now set to become the 55th player in program history to have his jersey honored by UNC. He follows RJ Davis, whose No. 4 jersey was recently raised, as the latest Tar Heel to receive the prestigious distinction.
As a true freshman, Wilson didn’t just impress—he rewrote the record books. He set new UNC freshman records for highest scoring average at 19.8 points per game, recorded 24 straight double-figure scoring games to begin his career, and posted 17 games with at least 20 points. Even more remarkably, he became the first player in program history to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists per game as a freshman.
Over the years, countless greats have come through Chapel Hill, but only two players have ever secured honored jersey status as freshmen:
Caleb Wilson and Tyler Hansbrough.

Legacy Secured
There was little doubt that Wilson—widely expected to declare for the 2026 NBA Draft—had already carved out a lasting legacy at North Carolina. Still, the Associated Press Second-Team All-American selection officially seals it, ensuring that his No. 8 jersey will take its rightful place in the rafters of the Dean Smith Center.
His impact goes beyond numbers and accolades. What Wilson accomplished in a single season stands among the greatest freshman performances the program has ever seen. His legacy is now permanent, and it’s one that future generations of Tar Heels fans will look up to—quite literally—as they glance toward the rafters and remember the year Caleb Wilson made history.
