There was always a sense that Kentucky was going to feel some transfer-portal fallout — but few expected this name to be the first domino to fall.
Kentucky’s roster shakeup is officially underway, and the latest departure comes as a surprise.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, veteran point guard is preparing to move on from Kentucky and enter the transfer portal once it opens. Lowe, who arrived in Lexington just last offseason after transferring from Pitt, appeared in only nine games for the Wildcats. Now, his brief stint with the program is coming to an end — a development that stings for Mark Pope and his staff.
When Lowe committed to Kentucky, expectations were sky-high. Coming off a standout season at Pitt, the 6-foot-1 guard averaged 16.8 points and nearly six assists per game, quickly making him one of the most coveted guards in the portal. Kentucky fought hard to secure his commitment, believing he could be a cornerstone piece for the backcourt.
Instead, the plan unraveled. A significant shoulder injury sidelined Lowe for most of the season, limiting both his availability and impact. He finished the year playing sparingly, averaging eight points, 2.4 assists, and just over two rebounds per game. Not long ago, Lowe had even suggested he expected to return for the 2026–27 season, expressing comfort with the coaching staff and his role within the program.
That tune has now changed.

Between the injury setbacks and inconsistent play when he was healthy, Lowe’s situation became another frustration in an already turbulent year for Kentucky. The Wildcats entered the season with legitimate hopes of a deep NCAA Tournament run, only to bow out in the second round. They were nearly eliminated in the opening round as well, needing a dramatic buzzer-beater from Otega Oweh just to survive.
With Lowe now heading out the door, it’s clear that major roster turnover is looming in Lexington. More exits are expected, and the transfer portal will once again be central to rebuilding the Wildcats’ lineup.
The potential was there. The expectations were real. But for both Kentucky and Jaland Lowe, the partnership never fully materialized — and now both sides are moving forward, searching for a better fit next season.
