BREAKING: Kansas State on the Verge of Major Roster Shakeup as Wildcats Face Another Key Exit

Kansas State Wildcats men’s basketball is entering one of its most important offseasons in recent years, with roster uncertainty growing as the program adjusts to a new coaching era and prepares for significant transfer movement. After a disappointing campaign that ended well below expectations, attention has shifted fully toward rebuilding, and every personnel decision now carries major importance for the Wildcats’ immediate future.

The arrival of Casey Alexander has created both optimism and uncertainty inside the program. While the new head coach is expected to bring a fresh system and different energy, the transition also means several players are reassessing their futures. Around college basketball, coaching changes often trigger heavy roster turnover, and Kansas State now appears to be entering exactly that kind of period.

That situation became clearer when David Castillo moved closer to leaving Manhattan by announcing plans to enter the transfer portal after two seasons with the Wildcats. The sophomore guard had developed into one of the team’s most visible contributors this past season, averaging 10.3 points and 1.8 assists while appearing in every game. His role expanded significantly during conference play, where he became a regular starter and one of the few consistent offensive options on the roster.

Kansas State LOSES David Castillo to Transfer Portal, MANY MORE Expected to Leave

Castillo’s sophomore growth had given many fans reason to believe he could become a central piece of Kansas State’s long-term backcourt. After playing limited minutes as a freshman, he took a major leap in year two by averaging more than 28 minutes per game and producing several strong offensive performances, including a career-high 22-point effort and another 20-point showing later in the season. Those flashes highlighted the potential that originally made him a highly regarded recruit.

Still, Kansas State’s difficult finish created a different atmosphere around the program. The Wildcats struggled badly in the closing weeks, and Castillo’s scoring numbers also declined during the final stretch, where he failed to reach double figures consistently. Because former head coach Jerome Tang was the coach who originally recruited him, many around the program viewed a transfer decision as increasingly possible once the coaching transition became official.

Now Kansas State faces a critical roster-building period with more departures expected as transfer portal activity intensifies. Castillo becomes one of the most important names tied to that movement, and his likely exit adds immediate pressure on Alexander’s first offseason. For a team trying to quickly regain competitiveness, the next few weeks may determine whether this becomes a smooth reset or a much deeper rebuild than expected
