The search for frontcourt help isn’t slowing down for North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball and Michael Malone, as replacing the production left behind by Henri Veesaar remains a top priority following his move toward the NBA Draft. The Tar Heels recently made a major splash by securing a commitment from 5-star big man Sayon Keita, giving the program a significant boost in the paint.
Still, Malone isn’t stopping there. North Carolina continues to be linked with additional frontcourt targets, and another notable name has now entered the picture: Brice Dessert. The 7-footer from France brings valuable professional and international experience and is expected to make the jump to college basketball next season.
Dessert remains a highly sought-after prospect, with multiple programs competing for his commitment. At one point, Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball appeared to have the upper hand. However, during a conversation with UNC legend John Henson, CBS analyst Adam Finkelstein revealed that Dessert is firmly on Malone’s radar, raising the possibility of a late recruiting push from the Tar Heels.

Finkelstein praised Dessert’s skill set, noting that his game offers more nuance than his raw numbers might suggest. With experience in advanced offensive systems overseas, Dessert is seen as a player capable of fitting into a complex scheme. That versatility could make him an ideal addition for Malone, who is expected to implement a sophisticated offensive approach in Chapel Hill.
At 23 years old, Dessert’s maturity and experience could be a major asset. Pairing him with a coach like Sean May, who understands what it takes to win at the highest level with North Carolina, could further elevate his development—especially around the basket.

There’s still plenty of uncertainty, and it would be premature to label North Carolina as the favorite. However, Malone’s apparent late push adds intrigue to the situation. According to Finkelstein, Dessert could have up to two years of eligibility remaining, meaning he could contribute immediately and remain with the program through the 2027–28 season.
For now, it’s a developing recruitment, but Dessert has quickly emerged as a potential difference-maker—one that Tar Heel fans will want to monitor closely as things unfold.
