BOMBSHELL: Kentucky Stunned as Top Center Target Chooses Rival Program

Kentucky’s late push to strengthen its roster for the 2026–27 season has hit another setback, as one of its key international targets has chosen a different path. Despite significant effort from head coach Mark Pope, the Wildcats were unable to secure a commitment from Brazilian big man Márcio Santos, who ultimately decided to continue his career elsewhere in the SEC.

Pope traveled internationally in an attempt to land Santos, making a personal visit that initially positioned Kentucky as a strong contender. However, according to Jonathan Givony, Santos committed on Wednesday to LSU Tigers men’s basketball and head coach Will Wade. The 6-foot-8 stretch center, currently playing for Maccabi Tel Aviv, had also drawn interest from programs like BYU, keeping his recruitment competitive until the final decision.

Santos brings a wealth of professional experience despite his relatively young age. Set to be 24 at the start of the 2026–27 season, he has already built an impressive résumé overseas, earning championships and All-Star honors across multiple leagues. His skill set and maturity would have made him an immediate contributor in Kentucky’s frontcourt rotation. Instead, LSU presented a clearer opportunity for a larger role right away. He now becomes just the second addition to Wade’s roster for next season, joining former Kentucky forward Mo Dioubate.

Even with this miss, Kentucky’s roster is nearing completion, with 12 of the 15 available scholarship spots already filled. Still, there are areas left to address. One priority remains adding depth at center behind Malachi Moreno, who is exploring the NBA Draft process but is widely expected to return. Additionally, the Wildcats may look to use their remaining spots on perimeter help, potentially targeting a high-level wing such as Milan Momcilovic from Iowa State.

With Santos no longer an option, Kentucky faces a shrinking pool of available talent as the offseason progresses, making their final roster decisions even more critical.
