BREAKING: New York Mets Stun MLB With Surprise Bullpen Shakeup as They Add Proven Veteran Arm in Bold Midseason Move Aimed at Stabilizing Struggling Relief Corps and Igniting Playoff Push

The New York Mets did not make a loud bullpen move. They made the kind of quiet move that usually says more about organizational concern than public urgency.

The Mets have added a veteran left-handed reliever on a minor league deal after the Washington Nationals designated him for assignment and removed him from their 40-man roster. On the surface, it looks like a simple depth addition. But for a club still trying to steady its bullpen, the move carries more weight than it first appears.

He is not an unknown flyer or developmental project. The lefty has appeared in 273 major league games over nine seasons with the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and Nationals. That level of experience, along with stretches of real success, is what makes this signing worth paying attention to.

Cionel Pérez secures the Orioles' 5-3 win

At his best, Cionel Pérez has shown he can be a highly effective bullpen arm. In 2022 with the Baltimore Orioles, he delivered dominant results with a 1.40 earned run average across 66 appearances, allowing just two home runs over 57.2 innings. He followed that with another solid campaign in 2023, finishing with a 3.54 ERA over 65 games.

That version of Pérez would immediately strengthen most bullpens in the league.

However, his recent performance has moved far away from that peak. In 2025 with Baltimore, he struggled significantly and posted an 8.31 ERA. His difficulties continued into 2026 with Washington, where he recorded a 6.19 ERA over 16 innings. The biggest issue has been command. He issued 11 walks while striking out only nine batters during his time with the Nationals, a major factor in why the team decided to move on.

Even with those struggles, the Mets are not necessarily searching for a finished product. What they need is depth, potential upside, and a left handed option they can work with outside the pressure of the major league bullpen.

Why This Move Matters for the Mets

This addition is more important than a typical minor league signing because the Mets cannot afford to ignore bullpen instability. Their season has already been shaped by injuries, uneven offensive production, and roster inconsistency. A shaky relief group only increases that pressure.

Pérez fits a common gamble teams make in these situations. He is a veteran with a track record of success who may still have something left if adjustments can be found. That kind of upside is often worth the risk at this stage of the season.

There were at least small encouraging signs before Washington let him go. In three of his final four outings, he did not allow an earned run and surrendered only two hits across four innings. While that does not erase his command issues, it does offer a reason for the Mets to take a closer look.

This is not a headline grabbing move. It is a depth driven decision aimed at creating options.

If Pérez continues to struggle with control, he may remain nothing more than organizational depth at Triple A. But if the Mets can help him rediscover even a portion of his earlier form with Baltimore, this signing could turn into more than just a footnote in the season.

For now, it gives the Mets another arm, another left handed option, and another indication that the front office is still actively searching for solutions before bullpen concerns grow even larger.
