JUST IN: Red Sox’s Connor Wong Drops Bombshell After Bizarre Play

The Boston Red Sox secured a gritty 3–1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, but the victory was briefly overshadowed by an injury scare involving catcher Connor Wong.

Red Sox catcher Connor Wong has made an offensive breakthrough with a refined swing and approach

The moment came on what initially looked like a routine play. Wong popped up from his crouch to track a foul ball drifting toward the stands, backing up to get a clearer angle. As he moved, he appeared to clip Phillies batter Edmundo Sosa, causing him to lose his footing and crash awkwardly to the ground in foul territory. While Wong remained down, the play stayed alive, and pitcher Garrett Whitlock hustled over to make an impressive sliding grab, finishing the out and drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Despite the defensive highlight, concern quickly shifted back to Wong. He did not return for the next inning, with Carlos Narváez stepping in behind the plate as the Red Sox opted for caution.

After the game, it was revealed that Wong had injured his ankle. Initial imaging provided encouraging news, as no structural damage was found. Wong later addressed the injury and sounded cautiously optimistic about his condition.

“It’s a little sore,” Wong said. “I’ve dealt with this before, and it’s been much worse. Everything we checked out looked fine, so we’ll see how it feels in the morning and take it from there.”

He also described how quickly the situation unfolded. “I was backing up to get a better angle and must have stepped on him and rolled it,” Wong explained. “At first, it was just one of those moments where you think, ‘That really hurt.’ Then I realized the ball was still in the air, heard the crowd react, and saw Whitlock out of the corner of my eye. I was just relieved he made the catch.”

Wong’s status over the next few days will be closely monitored as the Red Sox weigh their options. If he needs time to recover, the team does have additional depth at catcher, including Mickey Gasper, to support Narváez. For now, Boston walks away with a much-needed win and fingers crossed that their catcher’s injury proves to be minor.
