BREAKING: North Carolina Set to Land Massive Commitment From ‘Player of the Year’ Point Guard

Coaching changes often create uncertainty on the recruiting trail, especially for top high school prospects trying to determine where they fit into a program’s future plans.

Before the transition in Chapel Hill, former head coach Hubert Davis and his staff had already started building relationships with several standout players in the Class of 2027, extending offers to some of the nation’s top prospects they hoped would eventually wear Carolina Blue.

Among those priority recruits was Beckham Black, widely viewed as the No. 1 point guard in the 2027 class. Following the coaching change, Black — like many other recruits — was left wondering whether the new North Carolina staff under former NBA champion Michael Malone would maintain the same level of interest.

It didn’t take long for Black to get his answer.

Michael Malone and UNC reoffer Beckham Black

North Carolina’s pursuit of Black remains fully intact under Malone’s staff. According to David Sisk and AJ Jones of TarHeel247, the Tar Heels have officially reoffered the elite guard. Black shared the update after competing during this weekend’s EYBL event in Memphis.

Assistant coach Sean May was on hand to watch Black showcase his talent, further signaling UNC’s strong commitment to recruiting him. Since May remained on staff following the transition from Hubert Davis, there was already an established relationship in place between the two sides.

Although May evaluated several prospects during the weekend event, Black clearly stands near the top of UNC’s recruiting board. The highly skilled floor general continues to impress scouts with his dynamic playmaking ability and overall upside, traits that have many believing he could become a special player at the college level.

While coaching staffs frequently alter recruiting priorities after a transition, there was little expectation that North Carolina would back away from a talent like Black. The Tar Heels understand just how significant of an addition he could be for their 2027 recruiting class.

Landing a commitment from the elite point guard would immediately give Malone a massive recruiting victory in what would be his first full class at North Carolina.

As UNC’s current roster continues to take shape, the program’s focus will increasingly shift toward the high school recruiting trail. Expect Malone and his staff to ramp up their efforts in identifying which prospects they plan to prioritize moving forward, while also evaluating new names that could emerge over the coming months.
