There’s been plenty said about the Mark Pope era in Lexington — both positive and negative. As Kentucky prepares for Pope’s third season leading the program, many fans are anxiously waiting to see if the Wildcats can finally make a deeper postseason breakthrough under his leadership.
Still, one player has already cemented himself as a fan favorite in modern Kentucky basketball history. Otega Oweh, arguably Pope’s biggest addition and one of the Wildcats’ most clutch performers, delivered countless memorable moments in Lexington. His unforgettable half-court shot during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament only added to the legacy he built in blue and white.
Now preparing for the next chapter at the professional level, Oweh continues to receive strong support from Big Blue Nation — and he’s rewarding that faith with impressive performances at the NBA Draft Combine.

Making Good on a Big Opportunity
Dallas Mavericks reporter Noah Weber highlighted Oweh’s standout showing during Thursday’s final scrimmage, where the former Wildcat poured in a game-high 21 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
That performance came right after another strong outing in which Oweh, temporarily wearing No. 29, recorded 20 points and four rebounds. His elite ability to attack the basket and crash the offensive glass stood out to NBA personnel in attendance throughout both games.
“Mama, there goes that man.”

Whether or not the Mavericks ultimately pursue him, Oweh appears to be generating legitimate second-round interest across the league. Although Kentucky’s difficult season may not have significantly boosted his draft stock overall, he still managed to establish himself as the team’s leader and strengthen his reputation on a national level.
Averaging 18.6 points and 1.8 steals per game was enough to keep NBA scouts paying close attention throughout the year.
An Irreplaceable Memory
No matter who eventually fills Kentucky’s small forward role moving forward — whether it’s Kam Williams returning or another major transfer addition — Oweh’s impact at the position will remain unforgettable for Wildcats fans.
He arrived in Lexington during one of the lowest points the program had experienced in years and, over the course of two seasons, helped reignite belief within a fanbase desperate for hope and excitement.
Time and again, Oweh delivered when Kentucky needed him most. Whether it was knocking down a timely shot or making a hustle play on defense, he consistently stepped up in crucial moments.
The “Oweh” chants that echoed throughout Rupp Arena during his rise into an NBA prospect are memories Kentucky fans won’t soon forget. Now, Big Blue Nation eagerly waits to watch one of its favorite stars chase success at basketball’s highest level.
