BREAKING: Phillies Star Bryce Harper Makes Massive Announcement That Puts MLB on Notice

After a turbulent offseason filled with questions about his future performance, Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper has silenced many critics through the opening months of the 2026 season.

The two-time MVP got off to a slow start, but he has since returned to the elite offensive form that has defined much of his career. Through 53 games, Harper is batting .274 with a .362 on-base percentage and a .526 slugging percentage.

While his defense has struggled at times, posting a -8 Outs Above Average according to Baseball Savant, his offensive production has more than made up for it. Harper’s power has been especially noticeable, as he has launched seven home runs over his last 30 games.

As his numbers continue to climb, speculation has grown about whether he might participate in the 2026 Home Run Derby. Harper previously took part in the event twice during his time with the Washington Nationals, appearing in 2013 and 2018.

What Did Philadelphia Phillies Star Bryce Harper Have to Say?

Phillies Veteran All-Star Rightfully Selected As Team's Biggest X-Factor Down Stretch

Speaking with Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Harper addressed the possibility directly.

“I won’t do [the Derby] if I’m not an All-Star,” Harper said. “I just want to be an All-Star, first and foremost. And I want to be healthy. I’m going to take health into consideration, big time, because I feel great right now, and I don’t want to screw that up. So we’ll see.”

Given his recent offensive surge and the lack of standout first basemen in the National League, Harper appears to be in a strong position to earn an All-Star selection.

Health remains the bigger question. The 33-year-old has not appeared in at least 150 games since 2019, the first season of his 13-year contract with Philadelphia.

Adding to the motivation is the fact that this year’s All-Star Game will be hosted in Philadelphia, giving Harper an opportunity to perform in front of the home crowd.

If the Phillies are represented in the Home Run Derby, Harper may not be the only candidate. Kyle Schwarber has been one of baseball’s premier power hitters this season and became the first player in 2026 to reach the 20-home run mark.

Although it is uncommon for two teammates to compete in the Derby, Philadelphia could realistically have at least one participant in the event.

Is Harper’s Production Sustainable?

Philadelphia Phillies Legend Reveals Big Thoughts About Bryce Harper

The bigger question is whether Harper can maintain his current pace and secure that All-Star nod.

The underlying metrics suggest he can.

Harper owns a .405 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA), ranking in the 97th percentile across Major League Baseball. His expected batting average sits at .295, indicating he may actually be experiencing some bad luck on balls put in play.

His expected slugging percentage is equally impressive at .567, also placing him in the 97th percentile.

One area of concern is that both his hard-hit rate and average exit velocity remain below league average, but the overall profile still points toward sustained offensive success.

Harper is coming off a solid 2025 campaign, though many viewed it as disappointing by his lofty standards. He posted an .844 OPS in 132 games, numbers that fell short of expectations for an eight-time All-Star.

That performance even drew criticism from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski during the offseason. Dombrowski notably described Harper as “not elite,” prompting the veteran slugger to respond on social media by wearing a shirt featuring the phrase “not elite.”

So far in his 15th major league season, Harper has used that criticism as motivation.

If he continues producing at his current level, an All-Star selection seems likely. From there, whether he takes part in the Home Run Derby will ultimately be his decision.
