The Philadelphia Phillies have started to play better baseball recently, and that improvement could push the team into buyer mode as the trade deadline approaches.
Philadelphia is still chasing the division lead, but the more realistic focus appears to be securing a Wild Card spot. If the Phillies want to make the playoffs, upgrades will be necessary to strengthen the roster.

MLB insider Mark Polishuk believes the team’s biggest needs are in the bullpen and the starting rotation. The bullpen has been an ongoing issue, while the rotation lacks consistency. With Aaron Nola struggling and Andrew Painter proving unreliable at times, the Phillies are left with only three starters they can truly count on. Polishuk also noted that third base and right field remain areas the team could look to address.
He added that time is running out for Alec Bohm and Garcia to turn their seasons around. Philadelphia could also benefit from better bench depth, and any player acquired for a limited role could potentially earn more playing time at third base or in the outfield depending on what becomes available on the market. Overall, the expectation is that the Phillies will be active ahead of the deadline in an effort to boost their playoff chances.
Phillies Offense Goes Quiet
While pitching is viewed as the top priority, the offense has also shown signs of slowing down. Philadelphia dropped two of three games against Cleveland, losing 1–0 on Friday, winning 3–0 on Saturday, and falling 3–1 on Sunday.
Interim manager Don Mattingly described the series as a reminder of how tight playoff-style games can be. With strong pitching and effective bullpens, success often comes down to small details and timely runs—areas where the Phillies came up short.

Following the series loss, Philadelphia fell to 26–27 on the season.
Confidence Remains Despite Record
Despite being under .500, the Phillies remain confident in their roster. However, Mattingly acknowledged that the offense must improve with a pivotal matchup ahead.
He emphasized that while San Diego presents a tough challenge, the Phillies are not a team opponents expect to roll over. Still, they need to do more to put themselves in position to win.
Philadelphia enters Monday three games back of a Wild Card spot and will open a six-game road trip against San Diego and Los Angeles.
