While much of Mark Pope’s roster was already in place for his third season leading Kentucky, one of the program’s most important decisions remained unresolved. That uncertainty ended on Sunday when hometown standout Malachi Moreno officially announced that he is returning to Lexington for his sophomore campaign and withdrawing from the 2026 NBA Draft.
Moreno shared the news through social media, bringing relief and excitement to Kentucky fans who had been eagerly awaiting his decision. The Georgetown, Kentucky native enjoyed a strong freshman season, averaging 7.8 points and 6.3 rebounds across 36 appearances, including 30 starts. His combination of size, skill, and potential quickly made him one of the Wildcats’ most valuable young players.
Following the season, Moreno tested the NBA waters by participating in the NBA Draft Combine. He met with several organizations and took part in private workouts as scouts evaluated his professional prospects. Although many projections placed him anywhere from the late first round to the early second round, Moreno ultimately decided another year in college would best serve his development.

In a message to Kentucky supporters, Moreno has expressed his enthusiasm after returning.
“Big Blue Nation, thank you for the incredible support you’ve shown me from day one. After talking with my family, coaches, and the people I trust most, I’ve decided that Kentucky is where I need to be. Wearing this jersey and representing this state means everything to me. We built something special last season, but I truly believe we’re only scratching the surface of what this team can accomplish. I’m excited to get back to work with my teammates, continue growing as a player, and chase even bigger goals together. The love you’ve shown me has never gone unnoticed, and I can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in college basketball again. We’ve got unfinished business, and I believe our best days are still ahead.”
Pope previously identified Moreno’s return as Kentucky’s top offseason priority. Now that the talented big man is back, the Wildcats have secured a cornerstone piece for next season and strengthened their hopes of making a deep postseason run. With Moreno returning to anchor the frontcourt, expectations in Lexington will only continue to rise.
