The 2026 season has not unfolded as the New York Mets expected, and the club could be in position to move several players ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
Even if they manage to steady things over the coming weeks, the Mets would be wise to at least consider dealing a few pieces if the right offers emerge. One name that could realistically be on the move is $8.1 million pitcher David Peterson.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com identified David Peterson as a potential change-of-scenery candidate, calling him an “ideal” trade target for teams across the league in need of rotation depth this summer.
“The left-hander posted a 2.90 ERA in 21 starts in 2024, then made his first All-Star team last season, but with free agency only months away, his lack of a clear role could make him an ideal trade option for clubs seeking mid-to-back-end rotation help,” Feinsand writes.
If the Mets do end up selling at this year’s deadline, moving Peterson would be a logical decision for the front office.
The 30-year-old has had a shaky year so far, recording a 5.18 ERA across 13 appearances and seven starts, totaling 57.1 innings.
His fluctuating usage makes him a candidate the Mets could part with, even if they remain in the postseason picture by the deadline.
Given his reduced role, a change of scenery could benefit both sides, allowing the Mets to recoup value while reshaping their pitching mix.
With Feinsand already flagging Peterson as a potential fit for contenders, and given New York’s struggles this season, a midseason trade involving the veteran left-hander would not come as a surprise.
