If the Auburn Tigers ultimately decide to move on from hitting coach this offseason—a possibility many fans have openly called for—it would hardly be a painless departure. Regardless of how one feels about Auburn’s ongoing postseason struggles at the plate, particularly with runners in scoring position, Gross has still been an important and respected presence within the program.
Gross brings undeniable professional credibility. A former Major League Baseball outfielder, he spent seven seasons in the big leagues, playing for four different franchises. While he was often labeled a feast-or-famine hitter, he competed successfully during an era dominated by elite pitching. That background carries real weight, especially on the recruiting trail, where his MLB experience paired with Auburn’s elite facilities has long been a strong selling point.
That said, circumstances may be aligning for a change. With fan frustration growing and new opportunities potentially emerging, this could be the moment when Gross steps out from under head coach Butch Thompson and pursues a head coaching role of his own. Back-to-back Super Regional sweeps—last season and again this year—have amplified calls for some form of change within the program. Few believe Thompson should be on the hot seat, but many feel the offense needs a fresh jolt. Unfortunately for Gross, that frustration has largely landed at his feet, making him the most visible target for blame.
Gross has remained closely tied to SEC baseball throughout his post-playing career, including time spent working in conference media after retiring from the MLB. Now may be the ideal moment for him to take on a springboard job—one that could eventually position him for an SEC head coaching opportunity down the line, possibly even back at Auburn when Thompson’s tenure eventually concludes.
Why Jacksonville State makes sense
A move north to Jacksonville State could be the ideal next step. With the Gamecocks searching for a new head coach after their previous skipper departed for a higher-paying opportunity, Gross has reportedly emerged as a logical candidate.
The fit is natural. Gross’ deep recruiting ties within Alabama could immediately strengthen Jacksonville State’s roster. He would also be well-positioned to pull talent from larger in-state programs, particularly on the offensive side. After a disappointing early postseason exit this year, a bold hire like Gross could energize the fanbase and raise the program’s profile across the state.

At this stage, it does not appear that an immediate SEC head coaching job is on the table for Gross, making Jacksonville State an appealing and realistic pivot. The proximity to Auburn would likely allow many Tigers fans to continue supporting him, appreciative of the work he’s done on the Plains.
Where the coaching carousel ultimately lands remains to be seen, but a move to Jacksonville feels like a clean, sensible next step—one that could benefit both Gross and the Gamecocks while giving Auburn an opportunity to seek new energy at the plate.
