With how active Michael Malone has been on the recruiting trail for North Carolina, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the roster still isn’t completely finalized. For some time now, there’s been hope that Malone could add one more experienced guard to strengthen the team’s depth. That has raised the question of whether Oregon transfer Wei Lin could be the player to fill that role late in the process.

Meanwhile, UNC commit Kevin Thomas continues to generate significant buzz among NBA scouts, highlighting the overall talent level coming into the program.
Although most of North Carolina’s work in the transfer portal is already finished, Lin remains uncommitted and is still searching for a new destination. According to multiple reports, the Tar Heels have reached out to gauge his interest in potentially making the move to Chapel Hill. This wouldn’t be viewed as a splashy addition, but Lin could provide a steady and reliable presence off the bench if he ultimately joins the program.
Lin is an intriguing option. At 22 years old, he brings maturity and experience that are rare this late in the recruiting cycle. He just completed his first season at Oregon, playing under Dana Altman and averaging 6.6 points and 1.7 assists in 17.5 minutes per game. Before arriving in Eugene, Lin spent three seasons playing professional basketball in China, giving him a unique background compared to most college guards. He reportedly has two years of eligibility remaining.
It’s also worth clarifying expectations. Lin would not be brought in as a starter, as Terrence Brown is projected to serve as the team’s primary floor general next season. The excitement surrounding Brown is already building rapidly. Still, having a veteran guard with Lin’s experience ready to step in could prove invaluable over the course of a long season.
For now, Lin’s recruitment remains wide open. The next logical step for the UNC staff would be to bring him to campus for an official visit and explore whether there’s a mutual fit.

North Carolina has already been busy in the transfer portal, adding Brown, Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas, and Cade Bennerman to the roster. Brown, in particular, was a major addition after a standout season at Utah, where he averaged nearly 20 points per game. UNC beat out strong competition from Kansas and Kentucky to secure his commitment, making it a significant recruiting win for Malone and his staff.
Even with that success, depth behind Brown is still an area of need, and that’s where a player like Lin could come into play. While no final decision has been made, there is clear interest from North Carolina’s side. Whether Lin ends up being the answer or another guard emerges late, this is a situation worth watching closely as the offseason continues.
