After enduring a disastrous start to the season, the Philadelphia Phillies have managed to reverse course in impressive fashion. Now sitting at 40-33 and holding second place in the National League East, Philadelphia has won three of its last four games and currently occupies the second National League Wild Card spot.
With their season back on track, the Phillies are positioning themselves to be aggressive buyers ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. As they prepare for what they hope will be a deep postseason run, the front office is expected to target several areas of need.
One of the biggest priorities remains adding another impact bat to the outfield. As a result, Philadelphia has emerged as a leading candidate for one of the most intriguing stars who could be available on the trade market.
Phillies Landing Twins Star Byron Buxton
In a recent ESPN analysis, MLB insiders Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan ranked the top trade candidates expected to generate interest ahead of this year’s deadline. Among the most notable names was Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, whose future has been the subject of speculation for quite some time as the Twins continue to drift away from contention.
McDaniel and Passan also outlined several potential destinations should Minnesota decide to move its franchise star, with the Phillies leading the list of possible suitors.
“Minnesota is positioned to have another active deadline and go almost full rebuild, and if anything will change Buxton’s mind, it’s the Twins’ timeline. Should that happen, his chances of moving will be more like Skubal’s; and between Buxton’s multiple years of control and a reasonable contract, he’ll fetch a monster return,” McDaniel and Passan wrote. “Best fits: Phillies, Padres, Diamondbacks, Braves, Rays, Cardinals, Yankees, Rangers.”
Given Philadelphia’s need for another difference-making outfielder, a pursuit of Buxton would make plenty of sense. The veteran center fielder would add another dangerous power threat to a lineup already built to compete for a championship, giving the Phillies even more firepower as they chase a postseason berth.
Buxton has been outstanding for Minnesota this season. Through 63 games, he has launched 23 home runs while driving in 36 runs and posting a .275 batting average. His production follows a career-best 2025 campaign in which he recorded 35 home runs and 83 RBIs across 126 games. Numbers like that would make him one of the most impactful additions available at the deadline.
Phillies Should Be Willing to Make a Blockbuster Move
If Philadelphia is serious about competing for a World Series, it should not hesitate to explore a major trade for Buxton. He fits the profile of the kind of elite talent contenders often pursue at the deadline, offering both immediate impact and long-term value.
Another factor working in Buxton’s favor is his contract situation. The 12-year veteran is currently in the fifth season of a seven-year, $100 million deal, giving any acquiring team multiple years of control beyond this season.
As the trade deadline approaches, it will be worth monitoring whether the Phillies make a serious push for the Twins star. If Philadelphia can pull off a deal for Buxton, it could become one of the most significant moves of the season and further strengthen the club’s championship aspirations.
