BREAKING: Kentucky’s Malachi Moreno Drops Bold Message That Has Big Blue Nation Going Wild

Big Blue Nation received a major boost when Malachi Moreno announced he was withdrawing from the NBA Draft and returning to Kentucky Basketball for his sophomore season.

The decision gives the Wildcats another year with one of their most promising frontcourt players, and head coach Mark Pope believes Moreno has the potential to emerge as one of the nation’s elite centers.

Reflecting on the draft evaluation process, Moreno explained why he ultimately chose to return to Lexington.

“One day we got some of the feedback, and we were like it might be in our best favor to go back and really improve this next year and become, like Pope said, the best center in America,” Moreno recently said when discussing the NBA Draft process.

“Become the best All-American center in the country. I think next year is my year.”

Moreno acknowledged that the choice was far from easy. While Kentucky fans are thrilled to see him back in blue, they may not fully appreciate how difficult the decision was for a player whose ultimate goal is to reach the NBA. Like many college stars, Moreno believed he had a legitimate opportunity to begin his professional career this year before deciding another season of development was the better path.

His return should not be mistaken for a lack of ambition. Moreno remains focused on fulfilling his dream of playing in the NBA, but he now believes another year at Kentucky will better prepare him to achieve that goal.

After earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team during the 2025-26 season, Moreno finished his first collegiate campaign averaging 7.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He also shot an efficient 58.2% from the field while converting 69.8% of his free-throw attempts.

One of the defining moments of Moreno’s freshman season came in mid-January against LSU, when he delivered a dramatic buzzer-beater that helped rescue Kentucky in a crucial SEC matchup and proved to be one of the Wildcats’ most memorable victories of the year.
