The Philadelphia Phillies have fought their way back into the playoff conversation by shoring up several weaknesses that defined their rough start to the season, but one major roster question remains as the trade deadline draws closer.

Even with a noticeable turnaround in the standings under interim manager Don Mattingly, the Phillies have continued to struggle to get consistent offensive production from the outfield. That problem was compounded recently when newly acquired Adolis García suffered a season-ending injury, further exposing the lack of depth and reliability at the position.
As the front office looks for ways to upgrade the outfield for the second half of the season, it must also confront an important internal decision involving a veteran player who has been waiting in the minors. Bryan De La Cruz, a five-year major leaguer signed to a minor-league deal before the season, is nearing a July contract opt-out that could force the Phillies’ hand.
With that deadline approaching, Philadelphia will soon need to decide whether to promote the 28-year-old or risk losing him to another organization. The timing is especially noteworthy because De La Cruz has dramatically turned things around at the plate after a slow start to the year.
Following a strong spring training, De La Cruz struggled in April at Triple-A, but his performance has surged in recent weeks. He has been one of the most productive hitters in the International League in June, making his case increasingly difficult to ignore for a big-league club still searching for outfield solutions.
That hot stretch could not have come at a better time for De La Cruz. His contract situation means other teams may quickly show interest if the Phillies do not open a roster spot before his opt-out window arrives. He brings legitimate big-league experience, having spent parts of five seasons in the majors with Miami, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta.
While concerns remain about his aggressive approach at the plate and his defensive limitations in the outfield corners, De La Cruz’s recent production has reopened the debate about whether he deserves another opportunity at the major league level. With the opt-out clock ticking and the outfield still unsettled, the Phillies will need to make a clear decision in the near future.
