BREAKING: Phillies Officially Sign 29-Year-Old MLB Veteran Just Days After Yankees Release

The Philadelphia Phillies have frequently relied on internal depth in recent years, especially at catcher.

As teams continue to reshuffle Triple-A rosters during the middle of the minor league season, Philadelphia has quietly reunited with a familiar face behind the plate. The move brings back a catcher who already knows the organization and provides additional depth behind the club’s established trio of JT Realmuto, Rafael Marchán, and Garrett Stubbs.

While the signing is not expected to affect the major league roster immediately, it gives the Phillies another experienced option at a position where injuries can quickly thin organizational depth. It also represents the latest chapter in the winding professional career of a former major leaguer who has spent the last several seasons overcoming setbacks while pursuing another opportunity in the big leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies Reunite With Familiar Catcher Following Release

Philadelphia has signed 29-year-old catcher Payton Henry, just two days after he was released by the Yankees organization and only a few months after departing the Phillies’ minor league system via free agency, according to the official transaction log.

Henry previously appeared in the majors with the Miami Marlins but has primarily served as veteran Triple-A depth in recent seasons. Although the move may not attract significant attention amid Philadelphia’s postseason aspirations, experienced catching depth often becomes increasingly important as teams prepare for the stretch run.

Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2016 MLB Draft, Henry made his major league debut with the Marlins in 2021. However, he has managed just 43 career MLB at-bats while continuing to search for a more permanent opportunity.

“Traded to Milwaukee during the 2022-23 offseason, Henry has spent the last three years in the minors with the Brewers, (Toronto) Blue Jays, and Phillies without getting into another MLB game,” wrote Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors. “In 2024, Henry was limited to 27 games with Triple-A Buffalo after he was struck in the head by an opposing hitter’s backswing, and spent a three-month stint on the IL.”

The injury significantly disrupted his momentum at a time when he appeared to be building toward another chance in the majors.

Despite the constant movement that often comes with life in professional baseball, Henry has continued to embrace every opportunity. Earlier this year, after joining the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, he spoke about the competitive rivalry in the International League between that club and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs—the team he will now rejoin under his new Phillies contract.

“For this area, I know it’s a big deal when we play each other,” Henry said, according to Scott Walsh of Pinstripe Alley. “Being on the other side, this team whooped our butts last year a few times. We kind of went back and forth. Hopefully, we can take the cake (this year) and play some good ball. It’s exciting for people around here. It makes it kind of cool and gives us a little more edge to play with.”
