BREAKING: Phillies’ Don Mattingly Drops Major Cristopher Sanchez Message Ahead of Royals Finale

Cristopher Sanchez earned his second All-Star selection, but the Philadelphia Phillies left-hander heads into Monday’s series finale against the Kansas City Royals looking to put an end to a recent stretch of struggles on the road.

Kansas City will counter with left-hander Noah Cameron, who is also searching for answers after an uneven run during his sophomore major league campaign.

Sanchez (10-3, 2.00 ERA) has established himself as one of baseball’s top starters this season, ranking near the top of the majors in wins, ERA, strikeouts (136), and innings pitched (117). His dominant first half has even placed him in the conversation to start the All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia.

The 28-year-old continued his outstanding season Tuesday, striking out nine while allowing just three hits and two walks across seven scoreless innings in the Phillies’ 8-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He delivered the performance despite pitching with a small cut on his left thumb.

“He’s impressive enough,” interim Phillies manager Don Mattingly said. “Obviously, he sets the tone. … Attacking the zone, getting ahead in the count, all that.”

Despite his stellar overall numbers, Sanchez has hit a rough patch away from Citizens Bank Park. Over his last two road outings, he has surrendered nine runs on 15 hits, including three home runs, across just 10 2/3 innings. Before that stretch, he had allowed only 10 earned runs through his first five starts on the road.

He’ll also be looking for a stronger showing than his lone previous outing against Kansas City. Back in 2023, Sanchez gave up six runs on six hits, including two home runs, over five innings in a no-decision.

The Royals have struggled offensively during a 2-8 stretch, scoring only 24 runs over that span. Still, they managed to even the three-game set Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia.

Now the Phillies will try to secure their third consecutive road series win, while Kansas City is seeking its first back-to-back victories since June 22-23.

Cameron (4-6, 4.95 ERA) enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign in 2025, posting a 2.99 ERA across 24 starts while finishing fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting. This season, however, consistency has been harder to find.

Although he recorded quality starts in four of five appearances between May 16 and June 7, Cameron has struggled badly since then, compiling a 9.00 ERA over his last four outings while dropping two straight decisions.

His latest start came Tuesday in a 10-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, when he allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks without recording a strikeout. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, matching his shortest outing of the season.

“Wasn’t getting ahead in the count, which makes it challenging,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Cameron. “I think it’s different on different nights. … Just a little bit of inconsistency.”

Cameron has already faced the Phillies once in his career and turned in a strong performance. During Kansas City’s 10-3 win on Sept. 14, 2025, he allowed solo home runs to Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto but limited Philadelphia to just two other hits and one walk while striking out seven over seven innings.

Schwarber enters Monday still leading the majors with 30 home runs, though he has cooled off to begin July. After going hitless with a walk Sunday, he is 3-for-14 this month with seven strikeouts and has yet to homer. Bryson Stott, meanwhile, continued his recent surge with two hits Sunday and is batting .357 (10-for-28) over his last seven games.

Royals superstar Bobby Witt Jr. has yet to solve Sanchez, going 0-for-3 with one strikeout in their previous matchups. However, Witt stayed hot Sunday with two hits and also stole his 30th base of the season, marking the fifth consecutive year he has reached that milestone.

The shortstop has also thrived in interleague play recently, batting 8-for-17 with three walks and scoring five runs over his last five games against National League opponents.
