The St. Louis Cardinals will have more than just players representing the organization at this year’s MLB All-Star festivities in Philadelphia. Manager Oli Marmol has also earned a prestigious honor, joining the National League coaching staff after receiving a personal invitation from Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
For Marmol, the opportunity represents far more than a midseason celebration. It’s a recognition of his work as one of baseball’s respected young managers and a chance to share the dugout with some of the game’s biggest stars during one of the sport’s premier events.
Speaking with All Access Baseball, Marmol revealed that the invitation came directly from Roberts during the Dodgers’ recent visit to St. Louis. Rather than making it an elaborate announcement, Roberts extended the offer in a simple but meaningful conversation that immediately caught Marmol’s attention.
“Durham BP just came up and extended the invitation to join him and the coaching staff in Philly, which was pretty cool,” Marmol said. “And immediately took it to Amber and the girls and made sure that everyone was on the same page as far as using that time to go do that, and it was a no-brainer.”
The decision didn’t take long.
After discussing the opportunity with his wife, Amber, and their daughters, Marmol quickly accepted the invitation, knowing chances like this are rare in a manager’s career. While the All-Star Game is primarily about celebrating the league’s top players, being selected as part of the coaching staff is a significant honor that reflects the respect a manager has earned from his peers across Major League Baseball.
Marmol, who celebrated his 40th birthday on July 2, admitted he doesn’t take the recognition for granted.
“This isn’t an opportunity that comes around too often, and it’s an honor to just be asked,” Marmol said. “I’m excited about it, the family’s excited about it, and definitely thankful for Dave inviting me.”
His appreciation extends well beyond this single invitation.
Over the years, Marmol has developed a strong professional relationship with Roberts, one of the most accomplished managers in baseball. Roberts, who has guided the Dodgers to multiple National League pennants and a World Series championship, has served as both a colleague and a valuable mentor for the Cardinals skipper.
According to Marmol, their conversations have never been limited to casual small talk. Instead, Roberts has consistently taken the time to offer meaningful advice, discuss the challenges of managing at the highest level, and provide guidance that has helped Marmol continue to grow in his role.
That relationship made the invitation even more special.
Being asked by one of the game’s most respected managers to help lead the National League All-Star team is a testament to the reputation Marmol has built throughout baseball. Despite the ups and downs that come with managing one of the sport’s most historic franchises, he has continued to earn admiration from fellow managers and executives alike.
The Cardinals will also be well represented on the field during the Midsummer Classic.
Emerging stars Riley O’Brien and Jordan Walker have both earned All-Star selections after outstanding first halves that helped keep St. Louis firmly in the National League playoff race. Their selections mark another milestone for a Cardinals organization that has seen several young players emerge as key contributors this season.
Marmol shared that the announcement of O’Brien’s All-Star selection became a memorable clubhouse moment. The news was delivered by Dusty in front of the entire team, creating a celebration that reflected just how much the honor meant—not only to O’Brien, but to his teammates as well.
Those types of moments are exactly what make All-Star week so meaningful.
While fans often focus on the game’s brightest stars and the excitement surrounding the Home Run Derby, the event also serves as a celebration of the people who help shape successful organizations behind the scenes. Managers and coaches rarely find themselves in the spotlight, making Marmol’s selection all the more significant.
For the Cardinals manager, the trip to Philadelphia will provide an opportunity to learn from some of baseball’s finest minds, reconnect with colleagues from around the league, and represent one of the game’s most storied franchises on one of its biggest stages.
As the Cardinals continue their push toward the postseason in the second half of the season, Marmol will briefly pause to enjoy one of the greatest honors of his managerial career. Surrounded by the sport’s elite players and coaches, he’ll take the field in Philadelphia not only as the manager of the Cardinals, but as one of the National League’s trusted leaders—a recognition that reflects both his accomplishments and the growing respect he commands throughout Major League Baseball.
