ICYMI: Cardinals Make Tough Call on Productive Veteran Despite Strong Numbers

Veteran first baseman/outfielder is officially moving on from the St. Louis Cardinals organization. According to his MLB.com player profile, the Cardinals have released the 30-year-old, and Brian Walton of The Cardinal Nation reports that he has already secured an opportunity in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), where he will continue his professional career.

He joined the Cardinals on a minor league deal before the 2026 season and quickly became one of the most productive hitters at Triple-A Memphis. Across 284 plate appearances, he posted an impressive .277/.389/.519 slash line while blasting 14 home runs, consistently providing offensive firepower in the middle of the lineup.

Despite his strong performance, a path to the major leagues never materialized. St. Louis already had first base occupied by Alec Burleson, while the outfield was crowded with established options. Designated hitter at-bats were also limited, with Ivan Herrera receiving the bulk of those opportunities. Coupled with the Cardinals’ emphasis on evaluating younger players during their retooling process, Madris found himself without a realistic opening on the major league roster.

Rather than continue waiting for an opportunity that may never have come, Madris has turned his standout Triple-A campaign into a chance to play overseas. The move to the KBO is expected to provide him with a more substantial guaranteed salary and a fresh opportunity to establish himself as an everyday contributor. It also marks the second international stop of his professional career after previously spending time in the Australian Baseball League during the 2020-21 offseason.

Throughout his minor league career, Madris has been a consistently productive hitter. Over 2,085 Triple-A plate appearances, he owns a solid .255/.350/.450 slash line, demonstrating both power and on-base ability. However, that success has been difficult to replicate at the major league level.

Across parts of three MLB seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers from 2022 through 2024, Madris appeared in limited action, compiling a .204/.273/.286 batting line over 228 plate appearances. His most productive stint came with Detroit in 2024, when he hit .269/.324/.358 in 75 plate appearances, showing flashes of the hitter he had been in the minors.

After the 2024 season, the Tigers outrighted Madris off their roster before bringing him back on another minor league contract. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just 60 minor league games in 2025, preventing him from earning another shot in the majors.

Now, with his Cardinals tenure coming to an end despite an impressive season at Triple-A Memphis, Madris begins a new chapter in South Korea. The move gives the veteran slugger an opportunity to play every day, earn a larger contract, and potentially reignite his career on one of baseball’s most competitive international stages.
