Cardinals Pitcher Announces Retirement From Professional Baseball
Packy Naughton has officially announced on Instagram that he is retiring from professional baseball after his latest injury brought his comeback efforts to a close.
“For the past 26 years, baseball has meant everything to me,” Naughton wrote on X. “From growing up playing at the complex, to having my brother Jake behind the plate for me in high school, to pitching at Virginia Tech, I thought I had already accomplished more than I ever dreamed.
“After multiple elbow surgeries, countless hours of rehab, and giving everything I had to get back on the mound, my body has made the decision for me. My elbow just can’t do it anymore. I gave this game everything I had, and then some. While I’m proud of that, it doesn’t make writing these words any easier. None of this would have been possible without the people who stood beside me every step of the way.”
Naughton’s injury struggles began years ago. He underwent season-ending surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left elbow in 2023 before requiring another procedure in 2024. He did not appear in a game during the 2025 season, but after looking healthy in Spring Training and pitching well in three outings for Triple-A Memphis this year, another elbow issue abruptly halted his return.
During his time with St. Louis, Naughton developed into a fan favorite thanks to both his performances and his resilience. He appeared in 30 major league games for the Cardinals, posting a 4.14 ERA while recording 36 strikeouts against just eight walks across 37 innings.
As the injuries mounted, Cardinals supporters continued to cheer for the left-hander, hoping he could complete another comeback. Although his career ultimately ended sooner than anyone expected, it was never because of a lack of effort. The 30-year-old gave everything he had in pursuit of returning to the mound.
