The pitcher arrives in St. Louis after a turbulent stretch that saw him move between organizations during the 2026 season. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed pitcher Peter Strzelecki to a minor league deal.
Strzelecki is familiar with the National League Central, having spent time with the Milwaukee Brewers during his MLB career. He also returned to the Brewers organization earlier this season before being released on July 22. Prior to that, he spent time in the New York Yankees organization, where their Triple-A affiliate released him on June 18.
Despite the recent transactions, Strzelecki has posted encouraging numbers in the minors. MLB Trade Rumors’ Mark Polishuk noted that the veteran reliever recorded a 4.06 ERA with a strong 28.6% strikeout rate and a 4.6% walk rate over 31 combined innings with the Brewers’ and Yankees’ Triple-A affiliates in 2026.
Those surface numbers do not fully represent his underlying performance. A .325 BABIP and a 14.3% home run rate played a role in pushing his ERA higher, while his strikeout and walk numbers indicate he was still generating quality results. However, his lack of minor league options has limited his roster flexibility and made it more challenging for teams to quickly move him between the majors and minors.
Peter Strzelecki’s MLB background
Strzelecki has appeared in parts of three major league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Cleveland Guardians. His path to the majors was unique, as he did not make his MLB debut until he was 27 years old.
Throughout his career, he has recorded a 3.44 ERA with 86 strikeouts over 83.2 innings, showing the ability to provide reliable innings when given an opportunity.
His most recent major league appearance came with Cleveland in 2024, when he posted a 2.31 ERA across 11-plus innings. Since then, his work has primarily come at the minor league level, leaving questions about why he has not returned to an MLB roster despite producing respectable results.
The Cardinals are now giving him another opportunity to prove himself. If he can continue displaying the swing-and-miss ability and command that have defined his better stretches, he could become a valuable depth option for St. Louis as the season progresses.
