The Philadelphia Phillies’ 2026 campaign has taken a troubling turn since the All-Star break, and the organization’s issues may extend beyond its struggles on the field.
Philadelphia has gone just 3-9 over its first 12 games after the break, including a disappointing sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins, who entered the series riding a 12-game losing streak.
Amid the team’s recent skid, star first baseman Bryce Harper publicly urged president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to strengthen the roster before the trade deadline. According to reports, those comments were not well received by Dombrowski, adding to an already strained relationship between the two.
Tension between Harper and Dombrowski dates back to the Phillies’ elimination by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 National League Division Series, when Dombrowski openly evaluated Harper’s season.
“He’s still a quality player. He’s still an All-Star-caliber player. He didn’t have an elite season like he has had in the past. And I guess we only find out if he becomes elite or he continues to be good,” Dombrowski said after the playoff exit.
Harper later expressed disappointment with those remarks during spring training.
“I don’t get motivated by that kind of stuff,” Harper told reporters in February. “It was surprising because when I joined this organization, one of the messages was that we’d keep things in-house, and everyone was expected to do the same. When that didn’t happen, it caught me off guard.”
Recent reports suggest the relationship has not improved.
Harper and Dombrowski reportedly remain at odds
Following Wednesday’s loss in Miami—which left the Phillies 6.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East while shrinking their Wild Card cushion to just 1.5 games over the San Diego Padres—The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reported that tensions between the franchise’s biggest star and its top executive continue behind the scenes.
Gelb wrote that Harper and Dombrowski “have not repaired” their relationship, describing the pair as two influential figures who still do not see eye to eye after last year’s public comments.
The situation was further fueled when interim manager Don Mattingly weighed in on the debate over roster construction. Mattingly defended Dombrowski while responding to players publicly discussing trade deadline needs.
“Guys want to be GMs without really understanding where the organization is and where it’s headed—not just this season, but in the future,” Mattingly said. “Players like making personnel decisions and spending someone else’s money. Dave has been doing this for a long time, and he’s never been afraid to improve a team. We’re going to keep looking for ways to get better before the deadline.”
With Harper under contract through the 2031 season and Dombrowski widely expected to remain in the organization beyond this year, the Phillies’ leadership will likely need to resolve the growing tension. Otherwise, what has become an uncomfortable dynamic could evolve into a much larger issue for a franchise still chasing a World Series championship.
