The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past month and a half, but their impressive run has recently hit a rough patch. After losing Monday night’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston has now dropped three consecutive games.
While the team looks to regain its momentum, roster changes continue behind the scenes. The organization announced the release of a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher who joined the franchise in April 2025.
The Red Sox’s Single-A affiliate, the Salem RidgeYaks, announced that right-handed pitcher has been released from the organization.
Allmer began his baseball journey at the University of North Carolina Asheville and Seton Hall before earning his opportunity in professional baseball. He worked his way through the Red Sox minor league system and reached Double-A with the Portland Sea Dogs earlier this season.
The right-hander made a positive early impression and appeared to be building momentum during spring training and the start of the season. However, his progress eventually stalled, leading to a demotion back to High-A and later Single-A.
Across his first two professional seasons, Allmer posted a 7-10 record in 55 appearances. He finished with a 6.00 ERA and recorded 63 strikeouts over 93 innings.
Boston made the decision to release Allmer on Monday, around the same time the organization added another arm by agreeing to a minor league contract with right-handed pitcher Morgan McSweeney.
McSweeney, a Massachusetts native, spent time pitching in the CPBL this season and was previously viewed as a popular clubhouse presence during his time in the Orioles organization.
Red Sox Remain in Playoff Hunt Despite Recent Slide
Despite the recent losing streak, the Red Sox remain one of the top teams in Major League Baseball. Entering Tuesday’s matchup against Toronto, Boston held a 64-54 record and continued to position itself as a serious postseason contender.
The team’s turnaround has been one of the biggest stories of the season. During July, Boston went through an impressive stretch in which it did not lose a single series, climbing back into the American League playoff race.
The Red Sox currently sit behind only the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East standings. New York holds a two-game advantage over Boston, while Tampa Bay remains eight games ahead in the division.
With the postseason race tightening, Boston will look to end its losing streak quickly and continue the strong second-half surge that transformed its season.
