Auburn wide receiver Christian Neptune is among five USF pass-catchers who followed new Tigers head coach Alex Golesh from Tampa to the Plains. The talented wideout entered the offseason with plenty of attention surrounding him, but a shoulder injury that required surgery in the spring has limited his ability to fully showcase his skills during Auburn’s offseason workouts.
Missing spring practices and summer training can be especially challenging for a newcomer trying to establish himself, but Neptune has embraced the setback. Instead of allowing the injury to slow his progress, he has used the recovery process as an opportunity to improve mentally, develop as a leader, and become a better teammate.
“Not only did it allow me to grow physically, but it helped me grow mentally in the game,” Neptune said. “It also allowed me to grow as a teammate. You have young guys like DeShawn [Spencer], who had crazy production this past spring. Being able to be in his ear, help him, and guide him has been nothing but a blessing. It’s all about how you look at it, and I see it as a positive.”
Auburn’s wide receiver room has faced plenty of outside questions heading into the season, largely because the group features several transfers from USF and will now be tested against SEC competition. However, wide receivers coach Kodi Burns remains confident his unit has the talent and ability to make an impact.
For Neptune, getting back on the field against Auburn’s defense has provided valuable preparation. Facing one of the nation’s toughest defensive units has allowed him to sharpen his route-running, decision-making, and overall understanding of the offense while gradually increasing his workload.
“I’m continuing to dissect the defense and make full-speed decisions,” Neptune said. “I’m slowly getting my reps back in with the defense. We’re going against the best defense in the nation right now. Understanding how to do that and do anything KB wants me to do — whether I have to play inside, outside, or even be a scout guy — I’m just trying to do everything to the best of my ability.”
The biggest milestone still ahead for Neptune is getting cleared to fully participate without restrictions. Currently wearing an orange no-contact jersey, the receiver is waiting for the green light to return to full-speed action with his teammates.
According to Neptune, Auburn’s training staff expects that moment to arrive soon, putting him on track to be fully healthy and ready when the Tigers open the 2026 season in September. If he can return to his previous form, Neptune could become one of the key weapons in Golesh’s new-look Auburn offense.
