A couple of weeks remain before the college football season kicks off, and teams across the country will begin their pursuit of a spot in the College Football Playoff. Despite having strong national brands, several programs have yet to break through and reach the postseason’s biggest stage.
The Auburn Tigers are among those programs still searching for a return to championship contention. The last time Auburn played for a national title was in 2013, during the final year of the BCS era before the College Football Playoff was introduced. Since then, the program has struggled to find consistency, but one prominent college football voice believes the Tigers may have found the right person to change their trajectory.
SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum recently shared his excitement about new Auburn head coach Alex Golesh, particularly praising the unique approach Golesh has taken during fall camp. Rather than keeping the team on campus, Golesh relocated the Tigers to a resort, creating an environment designed to eliminate distractions and strengthen team unity.
“I do like what he’s doing… There’s a method to that madness,” Finebaum said during an appearance on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning podcast. “We do feel like we know what’s going on at Auburn. It’s a significant step up from what we’ve seen in a long time. I really, really like the whole concept of it, and I like almost everything I’ve heard from Alex Golesh so far.”
Auburn Searching for Stability Under Golesh
Finding stability has been one of Auburn’s biggest challenges in recent years. The Tigers have gone through four head coaches over the last six seasons, making it difficult for the program to establish a consistent identity.
Hugh Freeze was the latest coach to leave the position, leaving Golesh with the task of rebuilding a program that has struggled to maintain momentum. Frequent coaching changes can impact every area of a team, from recruiting and player development to establishing a winning culture.
For Auburn to compete consistently in the SEC and make a legitimate push toward the College Football Playoff, the program needs long-term direction and leadership.
That is why Golesh’s early approach has drawn attention. Unlike previous coaches who inherited existing systems, the former South Florida head coach has the opportunity to build Auburn’s culture from the ground up. His decision to move fall camp away from campus is just one example of the intentional steps he is taking to create a stronger team environment.
However, building lasting success will require more than creative ideas during preseason preparation. Golesh will need to develop Auburn’s roster, recruit at an elite level, and create a culture that continues to grow year after year.
For a program with Auburn’s resources, fan support, and SEC expectations, another coaching transition would only continue the cycle of uncertainty. Golesh now has the opportunity to prove he can be the leader who finally brings stability back to the Tigers and puts them back in the national championship conversation.
