The St. Louis Cardinals have decided to promote their No. 3 overall prospect, Joshua Baez, following Friday’s loss to the Chicago Cubs. The decision comes as little surprise given the impressive season the 23-year-old has put together in the minor leagues.
Baez has dominated at the Triple-A level, hitting .256 with a .328 on-base percentage, a .901 OPS, 34 home runs and 90 RBIs in just 103 games. He appears ready for the major leagues.
Manager Oli Marmol confirmed that Baez will make his MLB debut at Wrigley Field on Saturday, according to Jeff Jones of Belleview News.
Baez’s arrival could also open the door for the Cardinals to change Jordan Walker’s role.
Walker has officially broken out during his fourth major-league season. Through 118 games, he is batting .282 with a .342 on-base percentage, an .828 OPS, 23 home runs and 84 RBIs.
Although Walker enjoyed a strong rookie campaign in 2023, he spent the next two seasons moving between the minors and majors. This year, however, he has finally established himself as a dependable everyday player.
Walker also earned his first All-Star selection and delivered an impressive performance throughout the break, winning the Home Run Derby after upsetting Kyle Schwarber at Citizens Bank Park.
Most of Walker’s value comes from his offensive production. With Baez now joining the roster and capable of handling all three outfield positions, the Cardinals could have an opportunity to move Walker out of the outfield altogether. His size could make first base a potential option, while the team could also use him primarily as a designated hitter and allow him to concentrate on his bat.
There is also a defensive argument for making the change. According to Baseball Savant, Walker has posted a -6 fielding run value this season.
Keeping Walker’s bat in the lineup every day while eliminating the defensive liability would be a clear benefit for St. Louis, and Baez’s promotion finally provides the Cardinals with enough outfield depth to make that adjustment.
